In August 2023, after thoughtful planning, Drs. Ruth and C.Y. Liu, through the guidance of the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, donated 4.8 acres of property to Habitat for Humanity for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga. Located in an amenity rich area, across from the Shallowford Road YMCA and just a mile from Hamilton Place, the area offers excellent schools, public transportation, and job opportunities; still, there are very few affordable housing options.
Working toward a solution, we plan to build 24 townhomes on this land, with each building featuring 3-4 units. All homes will have 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and two parking spaces arranged around a horseshoe-shaped driveway, accessible from Shallowford Road using an existing streetlight.
The property does however present some development challenges, such as sloping terrain and a stream that runs through the middle of the land; therefore, we’ve chosen to focus construction on the front half of the property, preserving the back half as greenspace for the community. To ensure affordability, we will maintain our tradition of ensuring that future partner families spend no more than 30% of their household income on their housing costs, just as we have always done.
We are excited for this groundbreaking project and look forward to its fruition. We are especially grateful to Maeghan Jones at the Community Foundation and Ruth and C.Y. Liu, as well as all of the committee members and advisors who have helped bring the project to this point.
