The ReStore...Renovation

The first in the nation.

A sustainable fund to cover the operational costs of HFHGC.

Diverting hundreds of thousands of reusable material from the landfill. A model for over 600 Habitat affiliates to follow

All of these statements will be true upon the completion of the Leadership in Environmental & Energy Design (LEED) certified renovation of the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga ReStore (HFHGC)

In only five years the ReStore has exponentially increased its contribution to sustaining Habitat for Humanity and building more homes in Chattanooga, and has also improved the lives of others in the community. Hundreds of local families shop the Habitat ReStore and are able to make the needed improvements to their homes. Without the ReStore these families would continue to live in substandard conditions. Additionally, with construction being one of the most wasteful industries in the United States, the ReStore is one among the few that offer an outlet to contractors and businesses to dispose of their usable materials in an environmentally friendly manner. Major partners of the ReStore are The Strauss Company, Lowe’s, Home Depot, 84 Lumber, P&C Construction, Collier Construction, Southern Lighting, Brown Dog Construction and Hullco Exteriors.

The ReStore renovation will put HFHGC on the map as being a leading affiliate in the “green” movement. The renovation will combat the current flaws of the ReStore and allow it to enhance its benefits to the community while sustaining the affiliate. The renovation will include:

an increase of 3000 square footage retail space and additional storage space overhead.
• LEED certified building techniques to lower utility costs and its carbon footprint such as natural lighting, a rain water cistern system, new insulation methods and unconditioned areas.
• a 40 hour operating schedule per week.
• employment of at least three new part-time workers and serve the Chattanooga community more effectively.

The premise behind the renovation is to provide a sustainable and constant income for the affiliate to cover all operational costs. The estimated amount needed to facilitate the renovation project is $700,000. This estimate does not include in-kind gifts donated by local contractors and businesses.
