There are three areas that Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga uses to determine if an applicant is eligible for becoming a partner family:
Need for Housing
You may qualify for a Habitat home if your present housing is not adequate based on:
Unsafe housing - problems with your present residence (water, electrical, sewage or heating systems) or failure to meet city property maintenance standards. Overcrowded living situation - the number, the ages and the gender of the children/occupants compared to the number of bedrooms in your home. Being “homeless” - actually without a home or living with friends/relatives. Over cost-burdened - unaffordable rent payments.
You must be a legal US citizen or Permanent Resident and have lived or worked in Hamilton County for the past 12 months!
Ability to Pay
You will be buying your home from Habitat for Humanity. Applicants must show the ability to pay the monthly mortgage payment. The payments include a no-interest mortgage payment, property taxes and homeowner’s insurance.

Willingness to Partner
Once selected by Habitat for Humanity, you become a Habitat Partner Family. Partner families complete a minimum of 350 hours of volunteer work with Habitat, called “Sweat Equity”, which must be completed before moving into the home.
What is Sweat Equity?
There are different ways you are able to complete the “sweat equity” hours. You must complete 100 of the hours working on the construction site. The other hours can come from working in the Habitat office, the Habitat ReStore or helping at events.
Homeowner Education Classes
Partner Families also attend education classes to complete their sweat equity hours. The classes are designed to prepare you to build, own and maintain your new home. We want you to succeed as a homeowner!
