Thrivent Builds Home – Teresa Reed – Completed
Teresa Reed was born and raised in Chattanooga. She spent her younger days in the Alton Park community where she attended Howard High School. As an adult, she spent more than a decade living in public housing and Section 8 housing. “I was stuck in a rut and didn’t know how I would fulfill my dream,” she said.
Over time, Teresa watched her older sister become a homeowner. Then, later on, one of her close friends purchased a Habitat home. This motivated her to believe that if they could achieve the American Dream, then she could, too. Teresa and her son, Jamel, a rising senior at Howard High, have lived in a townhome for the past 13 years.
In her quest to become a homeowner, she sought help from another affordable housing provider. But in the end, she decided Habitat was the right fit for her family. Teresa also has an adult daughter, Brisha, who resides with her family in Chesterfield, Va., and an adult son, Tevin, who lives here in town. She’s the proud grandmother of three grandchildren – with a fourth one on the way! Teresa said she is truly enjoying her journey with Habitat. She plans to continue volunteering her time even after she purchases her home which, conveniently, will be located near the Habitat office! “I have been a helper to those in need and will continue to do so. I feel it’s God’s work that put these volunteers in my life to help with this life-long dream of mine. This has been a big blessing.”
Teresa Reed’s house is the 6th Habitat home built in Chattanooga in partnershipwith Thrivent Builds, the local Thrivent Chapter and area Lutherans since 2006.
